Admission Requirements

For Master’s programs
An appropriate bachelor’s or specialist degree or its equivalent, from an accredited university.

For Doctoral programs
An appropriate master’s or specialist degree or its equivalent, from an accredited university.

As we receive more applications each year from excellent candidates than we have places available, meeting the minimum admissions requirement does not necessarily guarantee admission.

Successful applicants have generally received previous education and training in fields relevant to our programs, including:

  • Computer science, computer engineering, computational mathematics, mathematics & applied mathematics, informatics, etc.
  • Physics, applied physics
  • Chemistry, chemical engineering
  • Biology, molecular biology, bio-engineering, biochemistry, biophysics, bioinformatics, systems biology
  • Materials science and engineering
  • Aerospace science and engineering, astrophysics
  • Mechanical engineering
  • Petroleum and gas engineering, geophysics, geology, geological engineering

Students whose primary education is in the humanities, business, or social sciences must have significant training in a field related to one of Skoltech’s programs.

English language

All applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English, the language of instruction at Skoltech. A minimum score of 80 on the TOEFL iBT, 450 on the TOEFL ITP or 6 on the IELTS is required. The language certificate should be valid for 2 years after the test date. A TOEFL or IELTS score is not required if the applicant received a degree at a university where the medium of instruction is English. No exceptions are made for this policy and only TOEFL and IELTS scores are accepted. Skoltech’s institutional code for the TOEFL iBT is 2909.

Submission of a General GRE score is not required for the Skoltech application. However, a high score may enhance your application. For further information on the GRE, please visit the ETS website for test locations, dates, and times. Skoltech’s institutional code for the GRE is 1294.

Application Requirements

Skoltech offers an online application​ to make the process quick and simple for potential students. Before beginning the application, we advise that you carefully read the application instructions, requirements, and deadlines for your chosen academic program.

The application includes your CV, two letters of recommendation, and a motivation letter. Submission of either TOEFL or IELTS test results is required by “Selection Weekend.” Applicants who did not get a chance to take any of these official tests will be able to take the TOEFL ITP during “Selection Weekend” at Skoltech.

Application process

Application to Skoltech consists of three stages:

Stage 1. Application at Skoltech’s online portal

Application dates for MSc programs for 2021-2022 academic year:
Open: November 5, 2020 
Close: July 16, 2021

The application includes an online form, your CV, a motivation letter, 2 reference letters and, if available, the English test results (TOEFL or IELTS, the certificate should be valid).

Stage 2. Online Testing

All applicants must pass online test. The better you pass it, the more chances you will have to get to the next step.

Stage 3. Selection Days

Every year, Master of Science applicants from across Russia and around the world converge at Skoltech for the Selection Days and a chance to gain admission to one of the Institute’s growing programs. During Selection Days, participants go through interviews and an English test. The Selection Days are also an opportunity for prospective students to inform themselves about the latest developments in Skoltech’s research and innovation programs. Invitations to Selection Days are reserved for those students who passed the test successfully and submitted the strongest online applications.
In order to get more accurate evaluation and selection, an additional on-site testing will be required for some applicants, upon educational program admission committee’s request. The applicants will be notified additionally.

To be eligible for the Ph.D. program, by the time of enrollment at Skoltech, applicants should hold an M.Sc. degree or equivalent (specialist degree) from a recognized institution of higher education and in a relevant area of study.

Application process

Application to Skoltech consists of two stages:

Applications to the Ph.D. program are accepted on this page. As part of the process, applicants must present the following:

  • Online application
  • Motivation letter
  • Resume/CV
  • Proof of proficiency in English, i.e. TOEFL or IELTS (students may submit an application without this information, but all will be asked to provide it at a later date)
  • Copy of transcripts, in English (and original language) of all higher education institutions attended. In the application phase, copies will be sufficient, but official copies must be provided at a later date.
  • Optional: results of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
  • As part of the admission process, applicants should indicate the Skoltech faculty member(s) with whom they wish to pursue doctoral studies. Applicants may review the Skoltech faculty profiles before beginning the online application on the web page of each PhD Program and get in touch (via e-mail) with the faculty member.

Stage 2. Selection Days

We highly recommend visiting Skoltech during the Open Doors days where you will be able to get detailed information about the program you are interested in, meet and talk to the faculty members and current students, visit laboratories, etc., as on regular days you will only be able to talk to the administration by phone or e-mail. Admission Requirements

What are the admission requirements?  

Master’s Programs
An appropriate Bachelor’s degree, or its equivalent, from a recognized university.

Doctoral Programs
An appropriate Master’s degree, or its equivalent, from a recognized university.

Who can apply?

Applications are open to domestic and international students. Applicants must be in their final year of their undergraduate studies or hold a higher education degree (bachelor’s degree, master’s degree or specialist degree) in one of the following areas of study: mathematics, technical science, applied science, physics, chemistry, biology, or related areas. Additionally, you must have a record of success in your studies as well as a knowledge of English.

Skoltech focuses on acquiring the highest levels of talent and applicants must meet at least the minimum requirements. Those who hold a degree in humanities or social sciences must have extended knowledge in one of the five areas of study offered by Skoltech.

As Skoltech receives more applications each year from excellent candidates than we have placements available, meeting the minimum admissions requirement does not necessarily guarantee admission.

What is an appropriate bachelor’s degree”?
An appropriate admitting degree is one that satisfies the following criteria:
a) The issuing institution must be recognized as having degree granting authority by the appropriate jurisdictional authorities.
b) The degree must be the standard first entry degree which gives access to advanced research-based graduate programs in the country of origin.

Financial Aid

Where can I get an application form for financial aid?

There is no separate application for funding. All applicants are automatically considered for funding. For every admitted MSc student, Skoltech will provide a fellowship including a monthly stipend and medical insurance.

What is the tuition fee?

The applicants who have successfully passed the admission process and are enrolled at Skoltech do not pay for their studies. The cost is fully covered by the university; for students, education is free of charge.

Will Skoltech provide stipends for master’s and graduate (PhD) students?  What is the amount of the scholarship?

Skoltech aims to provide the maximum financial aid to its students. All admitted master’s and PhD students will receive an academic stipend as well as full tuition and medical insurance. The standard stipend is 40,000 rubles for master’s students. For graduate students, this can be upwards of 75,000 rubles. Any further funding will be decided on a case by case basis by the admissions committee.

If a student already receives a scholarship from another source, is that student eligible for funding from Skoltech?
